Settling in as Staff Worker in Barcelona and Zaragoza
Happy new year to you all!
I hope you had a lovely Christmas and are looking forward to what God has in store for 2019. It is a real privilege to be serving here in Barcelona with GBU and to see how God is working in the lives of the students. Let me update you a bit on what has been happening since my last prayer letter and what these next few months hold.
Thank you for all your continued support; it is such a blessing to know that as I am doing ministry here I am backed by so many who partner me with in prayer, encouragement and financial support. I truly value it all, thank you.
“Castelldefelenca” is someone who lives in Castelldefels, the town which I have moved to. It has been a real joy being here since October, feeling part of church community and sharing life with my two flatmates – Mireia and Dayana – and others in the church. I feel a lot more settled now that I am away from the busyness of city centre and look forward to how God will use me here in this new community.
Mission week in November
Thank you for all your prayers, WhatsApp messages and support as we held our Mission Week back in November. It was so evident that God was going before us as He brought in all the necessary financial support just weeks before starting. The students stepped out in faith as they hired a 150m^2 tent in which all the talks were to be held. This was the first time we tried this in Barcelona and the campus responded really well. The tent created a neutral space where the students could come and engage with the talks. We are now in the phase of follow-up and reaching out to those who showed interest in learning more about Christianity. Prayers for the GBU student team who head this up would be valued, and that those who are genuinely interested would meet up to find out more and engage in a seeker Bible study, despite the difficulty of limiting timetables.
Forum 2018 – 50th year anniversary of GBU
In December it was a privilege to be part of the celebration to mark the 50th year anniversary of GBU. This conference, Forum, saw people from all ages, backgrounds and churches from across Spain come together for Bible training, seminaries and fellowship.
It was inspiring to see so many Christians worshipping together in the conference and to look back over the last 50 years – remembering what God has been doing through the lives of the people who serve Him – and inspiring to look to the next 50 years what God is going to do.
Coming up in the next few months…
January sees the annual staff worker retreat in Segovia, a time when we as staff receive training and also share what God is doing across Spain.
February is the start of a new semester and so the weekly groups start up again. I’ll be accompanying Marta, the student leader in Mundet (pictured above), and also attending the group in Zaragoza every 6 weeks or so, as well as joining the committee meetings via Skype.
March is the committee handover in Barcelona – please pray for God to raise up students willing to serve Him on committee and also students to coordinate the eight GBU small groups that we have across the city.
Praise and prayer points:
•Praise God for the response we had with Mission Week, how it all went smoothly and for how many students heard the gospel message, perhaps for the first time.
•Please pray that God would continue to work in their lives and that He would draw students to Himself.
•Praise God for the various Christmas evangelistic events that took place across Barcelona and Zaragoza.
•Please pray over the upcoming staff worker retreat – 14th to the 17th of January in Segovia. •Praise God for how I have really settled into my role as staff worker and also in the flat with Mireia and Dayana.
•Please pray for the next few months as we go into second semester. That God would go before us as a staff team and that we would inspire, equip, accompany and encourage the GBU students to be salt and light where God has placed them.
“Now to Him who is able to do immeasurably more than all we ask or imagine, according to His power that is at work within us, to Him be glory in the church and in Christ Jesus throughout all generations, for ever and ever! Amen.”
