I believe God is calling me to share the gospel with students in Spain and I would value your partnership to make this a reality.
With my dissertation handed in and exams finished I finally have time to write my second prayer letter and give you all an update on how things are going in terms of heading out to Spain in September. I am being sent as part of the ECM team, European Christian Mission, and once there I will be working with GBU, the organisation that oversees the Christian Unions in Spain.
These last few months have been really busy with university work and exams and so I have not had much time to work on preparing for Spain, but now I only have graduation left I can properly concentrate on getting ready for working with GBU. God has been so faithful and has gone before me during the busyness of it all!
I have been told where I will be working for the next two years…Barcelona! Here there are four main universities each with various campuses around the city. There are also three other universities in the wider region of Cataluña. It is really exciting that God is placing me in Barcelona as I already know the city and this region quite well, having previously visited this area on different mission trips in the past. It is lovely to see how God has gone before me and prepared this His way and in His timing.
Each of these university campuses is a mission field where the Gospel can be shared. Jesus commanded in Matthew 28:29 “Therefore go and make disciples of all nations…” and this is the vision of GBU – who better to reach students than students themselves. GBU is the missionary arm of the Church into universities across Spain. Currently there are 462,000 Evangelical Christians throughout Spain, which makes up approximately 1.02% of the whole population*. In terms of Christian students involved with GBU, there are roughly 580 students, which is only 0.04% of the entire Spanish student population*. This is such an important mission field where we can reach students with the Gospel!
During the Easter break I was able to go out to Barcelona for a short while and I visited the GBU head office there where I met Staff Worker, Jonathan, who is going to be my supervisor for the next two years. It was great being able to talk through what I am going to be doing come September; on a weekly basis I will be working alongside three, potentially four, GBU student groups in the city, attending their weekly meetings and also having one-on-one Bible studies with some of the leaders of the group. As well as this, I am going to be studying theology (in Spanish!! What a challenge!) so that I will be well grounded in my faith and Biblical understanding as I then go and share with others. Evangelism and training are two important areas for GBU as students are equipped to share their faith with those around them. Those are the areas in which I expect to be helping the various student groups that I am involved with, encouraging them to share life and their faith in a university setting.
It is amazing how fast the whole process is going! It was only a year ago that I contacted ECM to see if they would accept me as part of the team to go out to Spain, and here I am raising support with the plan to go out in September. ECM has been a real encouragement in helping me reach this stage, giving me lots of practical help and guidance in the whole process. Someone mentioned to me that normally a missionary takes a year or more, focusing a lot of time and energy, to raise all the support and finance needed and yet I have less than four months to do it. But I am completely trusting in God, as I honestly don’t think I could have done it any other way. He has brought me thus far and He will continue to go before me as I prepare for Spain.
There are many practical challenges facing me now, especially in terms of raising support in order to hopefully head out to Barcelona in September. I have currently raised 28% of the total finance that I need and so still have a long way to go. As part of the fundraising I am doing a prayer initiative called 60.60.60 where 60 people pray with me for 60 days that I would raise 60% of finance that I need. This is running from the 1st of June until the 30th of July and if any of you would like to join in, please do contact me. If you would like to support me or would like to hear more information about what I am going to be doing in Spain and why I am going, please get in touch, I would love to chat more about it! Thank you for taking the time to read my prayer letter!
Praise and prayer points:
- Praise God that I have finished final year at university and that it all went smoothly
- Praise God for how I am now able to focus my attention on support raising and working towards going to Spain in September
- Please pray for wisdom as God leads and guides me as I raise finance and prepare for working in Spain
- Please pray that I get all the support that I need for this ministry in Spain and that I would trust in God’s provision for me
