Prayer letter #14 February 2020

New student committee GBU Barcelona

Same mission, different setting – life in Spanish lockdown

Hey everyone,

I hope you are all keeping safe and well at this turbulent time. I just wanted to write to a quick update to let you know how things are here in Spain.

So I am currently writing this on day 44 of lockdown, and the lastest date that we have for this to end is the 9th of May. Unfortunately, unlike the UK we are not allowed daily exercise outside, which has been quite tough. However, they have just announced that from the 2nd of May we will be able to go out for exercise, which is a real answer to prayer! God has been teaching me to take a day at a time and trust Him that He will give me the strength, energy and grace for each new day (Lamentations 3:23).

Spain has seen thousands of deaths, but praise God that this is now changing as numbers are falling. Students have lost loved ones and are concerned about online examinations as the Spanish governement has susupened all in situ classes for the rest of the academic year. However, although things were very tough for the students at the beginning with much uncertainty, I am so proud of how they are coping with it all, creatively seeking to do community together and reaching out to others. Please pray for the students as many have been unable to finish their work experience, and this is especially unsettling for those who are in final year and need this to graduate. It looks very unlikely that we can go ahead with the student summer conference, as prayer for creativity and insight for the team organising this would be valued, as well as thinking over what the new term may look like come September.

Thank you for all your prayers, support, messages of encouragement and reaching out to see how I am doing in this whole situation. I really appreciate it all!

New committee in GBU BCN

The photo featured above is of the new student committee in GBU Barcelona, although due to the lockdown the official handover still hasn’t taken place! Keila (top left) and Andra (bottom left) along with Joana (bottom right), who is also helping out as a graduate. Having only two undergraduate students on committee is a challenge as they seek to motivate and encourage the various GBU groups across the city to share the gospel message. Please pray for them in this role and for wisdom for me as I work alongside them.

GBU weekly meetings

We have been continuing to meet up weekly in the different GBU groups. The photo above is of the group in Bellvitge (Barcelona). These three students are all studying Nursing and it is always a joy to study the Bible with them as they bring a unique perspective into the studies!

Zaragoza and Huesca (pictured beside) are also meeting online and have been studying Uncover John. The group in Huesca is very small, but they faithfully meet up each week and we pray that more students would join us here in the future.

Home and church life

Again everything is online and that includes church activities. On a Sunday morning we tune into Youtube to watch the service. Although not being together, it does feel like community as different households from church are taking part to record the announcements and worship (we lead it a few weeks ago!) as then the pastor gives the message. After the service we are then sent out a short Bible study based on that morning’s passage. Our flat and a few friends from another flat then do the study together via vide. This helps me as it feels like doing church a bit more “together” during lockdown.

Praise and prayer points:

Praise God for how He is teaching me in a very real way to depend on Him each day and to go in His strength.

Praise God for how He is looking after Mireia in her work in Intensive Care and for how I am able to support her in this.

Please pray for Spain, for wisdom for those making decisions, for the students who have lost loved ones and for the whole process of ending lockdown as we are able to head outside again. • Please pray for the next few months as restrictions are slowly lifted. Please pray for wisdom, guidance and grace for the staff workers across Spain as we make decisions for the end of term and looking into September, and as we walk alongside students as they process all that has happened.

“Because of the Lord’s great love we are not consumed, for His compassions never fail. They are new every morning; great is your faithfulness. I say to myself, ‘The Lord is my portion, therefore I will wait for Him.'” Lamentations 3:22-24

GBU Staff Worker retreat – January 2020

New semester, new opportunities

Hey everyone,

I hope you are all keeping well! We are getting ready for second semester here in Barcelona, with students finishing exams and classes starting again. Let me update you over what has happened these last few months, but first I wanted to say a massive thank you for all your prayers, support and love. Thank you to all of you who have been so kind and generous in your financial support for me over these last three and a half years. I am currently on 70% of my financial support for 2020. If you would like to start supporting me or would like to talk about what this could look like, I would love to catch up and chat more about this!

Student weekend away 2019

In October we had a student weekend away where it was encouraging to see around 60 students who came from Barcelona, Zaragoza, Huesca, Lleida, Girona and Mallorca! After the camp I was chatting to a student who shared that she was really challenged there as she realised that she is now in final year and she doesn’t actually have a close friend at university with whom to share life and the gospel. For her the training at the weekend away helped her see this and she is now praying intentionally that God would use her to share with her classmates.

A change of committee and a new role for me

March can only mean one thing, a new student committee for GBU Barcelona! This year not only brings changes for the students but also for us as the staff team. Isma is stepping down from working with the students here and I am taking over this role. I’m looking forward to this as it is something different, albeit not completely new, for me and I am excited to see what God is going to do here. Praise God for the faithful service of Rux, Marta and Joana over these last two years. Please pray for Keila who is continuing on and for the new students who will enter. Would God give them creativity, wisdom and passion as they seek to advance His kingdom here in Barcelona among university students.

Over new year I had the privilege of accompanying 230 students from Spain to REVIVE – IFES European student evangelism conference – where a total of 3,000 students from across Europe came! As David Montgomery (IFES) said on the closing night, “We are here because we have one vision. We are here because we are united in Christ.” The photo above is of the Spanish delegation on the last day when we split into our national movements for a time of debrief and prayer. For me, seeing so many students from Spain (from high schools, universities as well as graduates) all coming together was a very powerful image: the potential of so many students on fire for Jesus and the impact that the gospel could have through them is amazing. My prayer is that God would advance His Kingdom in Spain and that He would revive the hearts of the people here. Lindsay Brown closed the conference as he said, “When we are gripped by an understanding of the grace of God we find we must speak of Him whatever the cost.” Please join with me in praying that the Spanish students would be motivated by God’s grace to share the gospel where He is leading them.

Praise and prayer points:

Praise God for the staff worker retreat in January. It was a beautiful time of communion, focusing on Bible truth and practical training. It is a real privilege to form part of this team. Praise God for the new incorporations of Miriam, Marta and Laura as field staff workers for GBU. This is an answer to prayer, having three new female staff workers in GBU Spain!

Praise God for blessing the start of second semester and for all the students involved in GBU. It is a joy to be working with them and to see them grow in faith and confidence in the gospel message.

Please continue to pray for the groups in Zaragoza and Huesca. Please pray specifically that God would raise up a new generation of student leaders in Zaragoza.

Please pray for wisdom for taking over being with the student committee in Barcelona in March; that God would lead me and show me how best to help the students here.

Please pray for support raising, that God would provide people to partner with me in this mission in Spain; that I would depend on Him and His faithful provision.

Please pray for the upcoming events:

• Visit Zaragoza/Huesca: 27th – 29th Feb

• GBE Barcelona Urban Camp: 14th March

• AGM GBU Barcelona: 20th March

• AGM GBU Spain: 27th – 29th March (Madrid)

• ECM Biannual: 1st – 8th April (Croatia) • Visit Zaragoza/Huesca: 16th – 18th April

“Look among the nations and see; wonder and be astounded. For I am doing a work in your days that you would not believe if told.”
Habakkuk 1:5

Prayer letter #12 October 2019

Student leaders training conference with students from Barcelona, Zaragoza, Huesca, Tarragona and Lleida

Hey everyone,

I hope you had a lovely summer! We are now back to porridge, back into the routine of a new academic year. It was great being back in Belfast for the month of August where I was able to rest, catch up with friends and family, read, and recharge batteries.

I am glad to be back in Barcelona, ready for this new year. “Expectant” is the word that best describes how I am feeling right now: expectant of what God has planned for this year, for what He is going to do and how He is going to move.

The picture above is from the student leaders training conference that we had earlier in September. Andrew Reid came to talk to us on “Integral Mission” as we looked at Colossians. It was so encouraging to see students leaders not only from Barcelona but from across Catalonia and Aragon. What struck me over the weekend was the potential of these students as they seek to advance God’s Kingdom here in Spain and on the university campus. These students are the future Church in Spain, and it is an immense privilege to work alongside them and see them grow in love, faith and maturity in Christ. Please join with me in praying for them and for all that God has planned for this year!

On a more personal note, Mireia and I now have a new flatmate, Lidia. This is a sign of God’s provision for me as Mireia, Lidia and I have been friends for the last 10 years as they used to come to my home church to help with Holiday Bible Club, and we stayed in touch ever since. And now I am living with them! God’s faithfulness and provision blows me away, and how He has been setting me up for this by providing such friendships before I even felt the call to Spain.

Revive Europe

This New Year I am going to be celebrating it a bit differently: REVIVE is a student evangelism equipping conference organised by IFES Europe, from the 27th of December to the 1st of January in Germany. The theme is Revival, a hunger for a move of God. Each IFES country has a team delegate who is part of the organising and recruiting and since May I have been part of this, representing GBU Spain. We currently have roughly 150 students signed up for REVIVE from Spain, which is amazing! It is tradition here that young people to spend new year with their families, so this is a really surprising and encouraging number of students for GBU.

As part of the run-up to the conference, each week a different European country is featured for prayer. You can find the video for Spain by searching “Revive Spain” in Youtube!

Catalonia and Aragon

I think I have previously mentioned Manuela, a student in Huesca who hopes to start up a GBU group on her campus there. Manuela has been attending the group in Zaragoza but this year we are starting up a group in Huesca (270km from Barcelona). It was so encouraging to see her at the weekend away and to see how God is going before her, bringing different contacts and paving the way. We could have up to six students in this GBU group, which is incredible! On a campus of 3,000 students, to have a group of Christian students meeting up regularly to pray, read the Bible and invite their friends to discover Jesus for themselves, just imagine the impact that this could have! Please pray for Manuela and the other students in Huesca, as well as the relationship with the local churches there, that they would be inspired to see a Christian witness on campus and would support the group there. Please pray for wisdom for me as I accompany Manuela and the other students and travel up there too.

Praise and prayer points:

Praise God for my rest over summer, for Lidia and Mireiain the flat and for being settled back into life here in Barcelona.

Praise God for the weekend away with the student leaders and all the training, fellowship, community and conversations that took place.

Please pray that God would go before us as the GBU small groups start up, as new students come and that they would be inspired with the mission to be salt and light on campus.

Please pray for those organising REVIVE and for the thousands of students who will be attending. Please pray that God would first revive our individual hearts and that from this conference students would spread out across Europe with the gospel message.

Please pray that God would go before me and equip me for all the different challenges and areas of work that He for me this year.

So then, just as you received Christ Jesus as Lord, continue to live your lives in Him, rooted and built up in Him, strengthened in the faith as you were taught and overflowing with thankfulness. Colossians 2:6-7
